ABC10, a TEGNA-owned, ABC affiliate station in Sacramento, CA is committed to telling stories of people that are often overlooked and underreported. We are searching for a talented and self-motivated Race and Culture Content Producer to help launch and produce content with deeper reporting at the intersection of race, gender, politics, and culture. The Race and Culture reporting team will guide and produce daily and special coverage in a space that is dynamic and requires closer investigation, relevant interviews, and incisive investigative reports. The main objective is to push the company-wide mission to serve the greater good of our diverse communities, and the station’s “We Stand for You” brand. This includes keeping the public informed, holding the powerful accountable, and giving a voice to the voiceless.
The ideal candidate must be passionate about working in local news to consistently cover historically overlooked communities and groups. This includes but is not limited to, how social/political identities (gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, disability, economic and immigration status) impact the lives of the public at large, with an emphasis of highlighting inequality and those who combat those inequalities.
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about past and current news events surrounding race, culture, and social justice issues. We are looking for someone with strong broadcast and digital skills, to successfully produce impactful and innovative content for all platforms.
Work with the Race and Culture ream to deliver on-air news events in an engaging, exciting, and accurate manner.
Write in a captivating and conversational manner.
Responsible for reporting on the Race & Culture beat and shaping the content for all ABC10 platforms.
Brainstorm story angles from the appropriate culture and racial lens to provide an accurate representation of a race, culture, or underrepresented group.
Develop original content ideas through social listening and independent sources.
Lead and create audience engagement tactics for all platforms.
Serve as liaison to the news team to air and publish the content on all platforms.
Use consumer analytics and social listening to determine content.
Write and post stories to all ABC10 online Digital-Mobile-social platforms.
Use Social media mining tools (CrowdTangle, TweetDeck, Dataminr) to discover unique content.
BA/BS in journalism, communications, or related field
At least 3 years of journalism experience, broadcast news preferred.
Understanding of the tenets of Journalism.
Significant reporting experience and sources in the area of Race & Culture.
An established record of producing creative, exclusive stories and strong writing/scripting skills.
Insatiable curiosity – you just have to dig deeper to find the truth.
Tenacity to pitch and develop the stories you believe in.
Experience performing well under pressure.
An experienced broadcast journalist.
A pro at social media and other digital tools.
Demonstrated ability covering race, politics, and culture stories.
Proficient in relevant languages, including Spanish.
Knowledge of ENPS and Edius and Premier preferred.
