Michael B. Scates, MBA-HCM, DPT, has been the Chief Operating Officer since May 2021 for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals/Health Plan in Sacramento where more than 341,177 Kaiser Permanente members are provided local health plan and hospital services at the 287-bed Sacramento Medical Center.
Kaiser Permanente insures about one-third of the Greater Sacramento region’s population and has nearly 12,000 employees and more than 1,540 physicians. The not-for-profit organization is the largest health care provider in the region.
Scates began his career with Kaiser Permanente as a physical therapist in 2001 and then took on a variety of roles of increasing scope and responsibility before serving as the Continuum Administrator at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center from 2018 to 2021. In that role, Scates was responsible for all post- acute care services and utilization management that support the Oakland and Richmond Medical Centers, and Pinole and Alameda Medical Office Buildings.
His background includes working for the Institute on Aging as a Vice President, Integrated Care Services; Orthopedic & Neurological Rehabilitation, Inc., Regional Director of Operations; and North Coast Rehab, North American Health Care, President.
He holds a Master of Business Administration, Health Care Management, Southern New Hampshire University; Doctor of Physical Therapy, University of California, San Francisco; Master of Science, Physical Therapy, University of California, San Francisco; and Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles.
